Paul,
as you are a bass-guitarist you might be able to help. My eldest son (now 13) has had guitar lessons for about two years now. He has a very basic electric guitar that didn’t cost us a fortune, however, it is probably not much more than a toy.
He now wants a new one; of course a Gibson Les Paul. I do have slight problems with spending most likely more than a 1,000 pounds for an instrument for a thirteen-year-old.
While searching through the web, I have come across a number of replicas which are apparently very good, some say even better than the original. These are the Greco EG 600 and the Orville Les Paul (it seems that Orville were even commissioned by Gibson as they couldn’t keep up with the demand). These guitars are far more affordable than original Gibsons and it seems they aren’t inferior to the originals.
I am by no means an expert on electric guitars, perhaps you can let us know what you think.
Many Thanks
Peter

Well, here is Nicholas with his Tokai Les Paul LS50. He filmed this himself a fortnight or so ago. He’s beginning to wonder why he’s not getting any feedback. Come on fellas…! Do him a favour!
Thanks
Peter
well played….. good song choice as well. 🙂

I know nothing about guitars myself Pete, and I don’t really appreciate music as much as I really should (I just listen to it but never really in-depth and decide whether I like the sound/s or not!), but what I will say based on that video is that your son is very talented for a 13 year old! I wish him the best of luck in paving a career for himself as a budding musician, assuming that is what he wants to do in life, or is playing the guitar just a hobby for him?!:)

Ah well, cant blame a chap for trying 😉 that said id be careful with that LP, you could get totally nailed on import tax, im not entirely sure, might be worth ringing up customs 🙂
Cheers
Ben
Yes, we’ve already checked on that. Import tax is 19 percent of the total price, that is including shipping costs, which I think is a rip-off. I can accept paying import tax for the goods being imported but not for the shipping costs for having these goods imported.
Ah well – so be it.

I thought he used Kramers?
He’s got a vast collection of guitars, including an Ibanez Destroyer.
He’s used it on more than one album.

Kabir, I think you mean you just don’t like them, that’s entirely different to the instrument being rubbish. It obviously isn’t one of my main instruments but I have a £400 Ibanez bass that feels pretty good to me. It sounds pretty damned good as well.
yea i guess thats a better way to put it. 😮
I find Ibanez guitars completely characterless.

And yet they’re good enough for Eddie Van Halen. 😎

We tried out two “Tokai Les Pauls”
The original Tokai instruments were wonderful. I used to have a 1983 Tokai Jazz Bass (which I gave to my boss when I bought my Musicman Stingray). The pickups lacked a little in output but the tone was very smooth and warm and the neck was incredible; it just felt very very right. I believe it was actually Tokai who made Fender start producing guitars in Japan after they managed to get their hands on an early Tokai and realised it was as good as, if not better than their standard US made instruments.
I’m not really sure what the newer Tokai guitars are like but I’d be interested in trying a few out to see how they hold up against the earlier ones!

When I left school (1979), the first thing I bought with my first paycheck was an Ibanez Fender Strat copy, 2nd hand but in mint condition. But around 1995 just after South Africa became a “democracy”, it was liberated from my house along with all my other belongings including navigation software source code that I had developed for an airline. It is probably playing in some dingy shebeen(illegal bar) in Soweto right now if they haven’t broken it. 😡

We tried out two “Tokai Les Pauls” yesterday and both realised, that before getting him a new guitar it would be best to get him a better Amp than the one he has now instead. One of those amps we used yesterday was pretty good, so I think we’ll go for that first.
The instruments we played yesterday were an LS50 which is well within my financial possibilities and the second was an LS95 which was way beyond. The LS95 sounded a bit “softer” than the LS50 which Nicholas and I both agreed sounded better than the 95.
Nicholas now plays an Epiphone SG so we don’t see much point in getting him an Epiphone Les Paul as it would be basically the same guitar in a different design.
There are some marvellous offers up on Ebay but I think we might want to be careful there.
Both guitars yesterday fit Nick beautifully he got on with them instantly.

Heretic! 😡
I speak only the truth. At least only the truth according to my own opinion, and my own opinion is that Santana’s tone in recent years has had less character, tone and warmth than one of my farts after a day eating and drinking at the APH.
Blunt, but true! 😀
