Question for propellerheads (Anneorac?)

To assist with the Whirlwind project.. does anyone know the actual diameter of the Hamilton Standard propeller ‘D’ shank? Before anyone suggests it, I have the manuals – they don’t help except to say that the diameter of the shank equates to ‘SAE 1 1/2’.. well, 1.5 inches it ain’t, which leaves me clueless.

The reason I’m asking now is that I’d happily assumed that we could use the very common American ‘D’ shank hub on the Whirly. However, it looks like Blenheim restorers in Canada have had trouble finding parts for their hubs in the past, which suggests there isn’t commonality betweeen Hamilton Standard and ‘Licence Built’ DH hubs after all.

Also – where is shank diameter actually measured? DH CP blades have a graceful ‘waisted’ profile along the shank- ie variable diameter..

Help
