Question for the specialists

Hi folks ,

I was watching a show on TV yesterday and they were showing a very brief sequence of a plane taking off from below.

I notice that this bird had a non symetrical nose gear. I mean once down , the nose wheel wasn’t in the middle of the body. Maybe some soviet thing?

Anyone have an idea what it could be?

Its pitty for that Trident to be destroyed!! Come on now, its part of the heritage of the airplane industry UK once had.!!!

If they want it out of there to gain the space…. Why dont they store it and put it inside Terminal 5 when it will be built.. as part of the “amusement” of the potential passengers that will travel? Something like a Museum?

Terminal 5 will be used by British Airways, so wont that be a nice idea to place the Trident inside there in full BA c/s?

I occasionally instruct in the old BEA Trident sim down near Gatwick. I prepped SkyCruiser in it for his Cathay sim assessment. It must have been ok as he got in! Come down south and have a go.

Mine too Andrew. We have a beautiful Trident at Duxford in the old BEA “red square” livery. A 3 would look nice there rather than being scrapped!

I think its B*ll*cks to get rid of that Trident. In my mind it stands as a tribute to British Aviation. One of Only a handful of Pristine Tridents left in the UK, and they want it scrapped.

1. It doesn’t really take up that much space.

2. If they really want it gone, then move it to a location where its either wanted (i.e Museum) or to a location where it wont be in the way.

I love seeing that Trident eveytime I go to LHR, It wouldn’t be the same without it.

That seems to be the thing with BA though, as long as they get what they want their happy. First Not allowing R.Branson to have, no sorry, BUY! a Concorde from them, and now getting rid of the Trident.

If theres a petition running somewhere to save this trident, you can bet your life my name will be on it!

Sorry to Rant on.

Yes, apparently BAA and BA have stopped access to the Trident for members of the Trident Preservation Society who played a huge part in the Heathrow preservation. Sounds like BA want it scrapped and BAA want the space it occupies.

No it was because the only available space to stow the wheel lay from side to side rather than fore and aft. I have quite a few hours in Trident sims and you can feel the offset nosewheel’s affect through the tiller.

This non symetric nose gear is really amazing. I wonder why they did that.
Maybe the steering mechanism is simplier since just below the captain ??

While we’re on the subject of tridents, does anyone know if they still do the annual openday with the trident at LHR?

You can just about see it here, although Andrew’s example is clearer.

I’ve seen that too. Didn’t the Trident have an offset nose wheel ?
