Question for Wysiwyg

Wysiwyg.

Can you give me any idea of the height an airliner would be as it crosses Walsall on approach to One-five at BHX? Also a rough speed? We seem to get quite a few now turning right over my back garden and some, particularly the heavier aircraft, seem very low. Presumably they are turning right to intercept the ILS.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Thanks Moondance. In addition, typically most air traffic units require about 160 knots between about 4-7 miles, 180 knots between 7-10 miles and about 210 knots for a few miles prior to that.

BHX ATC have their own website at www.egbb.co.uk – worth a look.

Moondance.

Thanks for that. Absolutely brilliant. They seem to be coming across ever lower and it is common to hear them throttling back as they pass overhead.

Thanks again.

On a 3 degree glideslope, descent is approx 300 ft per nautical mile. So if Walsall is at (say) 10 nm from touchdown on 15 , aircraft will be roughly at 3000ft agl, if following the notional glideslope. If you have a look at www.ais.org.uk (you need to register, but it is free) and look at Aerodrome Data in the UK AIP you will see minimum altitude in the Radar Vectoring Area around Walsall is 2500ft, becoming 2000ft shortly afterwards, so traffic could be slightly lower if at the minimum vectoring altitude. As to speed, depends on type and ATC speed requirements – jets would unlikely to be faster than their minimum clean speed (about 210 kts), but almost certainly reducing speed as they turn for the ILS.

Sorry Kev, I’ve never flown out of BHX and I don’t know where Walsall is relative to the R15 threshold. When I get back from my Glasgow/Malaga/Seville epic on thursday I’ll look at a map and try to deduce an answer.
