Question: Smokey UA 777 engines.

Maybe I am wrong, but I have the impression that UA’s engines are more smokier than those of other airlines. In particular the 777 seems to be gusting lots of brown stuff in particular at the start of the take-off roll.

Has anyone else noticed the same? If so does someone know what the possible cause(s) can be? Does UA use cheaper fuel, or do they use higher power settings at take-off, sloppy maintenance or something else altogether?

I never noticed that neither.
I have seen a bunch of 777’s taking off (BA AF CO UA) and I didn’t notice any difference.

All of UA’s 777’s are P&W powered (as is most of their fleet for that matter), Airline Owner, and as I mentioned in a previous thread, JAL, ANA and Korean’s 777’s are also P&W powered. I haven’t really noticed if they are smokier than most, Peter, but then again, I am usually one of the pax and I can’t tell from the inside. 😉

I think UA are one of the only airlines to use P&W engines on their 777’s, all the others either use RR or GE.
