Well done Mike J :
I happened to be working at Benson where they restoring Black6 at the time, and F/sgt told me there were 2 other aircraft in the next hanger,it was a bit of a surprise to see the mossie and spit.As I was looking round the mossie Nick Grace and a friend turned up to collect his Spitfire which of course they took great interest in,and even when I mentioned the 109 in the next hanger (i believe he purchaced a “bouchon “not long after”.With that all over he asked I would mind helping to push the spitfire out the hanger ,I just could not refuse ,what a great day I had.

Hard to tell.

Slipper tanks plus fresh camoflage paint to me says “about to fly to the US”. It looks like a RAF hangar so….

But it’s only a guess!

The bulged doors are fitted in this shot. There was an aerodynamic “lip” fitted ahead of the bomb bay to accomodate the bigger doors and if you look very carefully, it’s there in this shot. You can see it just obscuring the edge of the porthole in the cabin door.

Webpilot,

Ah yes I see it now. But is the oversize tank fitted?

Yes but in the back of my mind I seem to remember there was an enormous bomb bay fuel tank fitted that protruded outside the fuselage section and required special bulged doors.

Help me Bruce. 🙂

Overload fuel.

I can see the external tank on the stbd wing.

Long range tank.

Bomb bay doors open. No sign of the special long range tank installed/overseen by Personal Plane Services at Booker for the Atlantic ferry flight.

Just a hunch – Leavesden or Hatfield.
