Trying to find out about the wartime history of R.A.F.Woodvale and in particular squadrons serving there during the war years – can anyone help?

Absolutely.
Total miracle I’m here at all. One long catalogue of defying gravity and escaping mortality by luck and good fortune.
If I had any sense I’d stay on the ground.
Have I told you about my Qualifying Cross Country and the Snowstorm?

Every PPL has a Qualifying Cross Country Story!

There is also a large photographic display within the RAF Millom Museum

I assume that this kind of escapade has been a recurring theme throughout your aviation career? 😉

Amazing how our paths diverged from there, but we end up bumping into each other here.
You’ll remember me 😉 I was the useless cadet whose headphone lead got trapped in the canopy on my first flight 😮

I may well have strapped you in. Was a 10 AEF staff cadet around that time. Also worked weekends in the tower during that time as a glorified tea boy.

Kev – Have you got hold of a copy of “A History of RAF Woodvale” by Aldon P. Ferguson?
Just bought a copy for half price (£4.99) from Midland Counties http://www.ianallanpublishing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=254_255_256_285&products_id=26826

I’m not at all surprised that you can’t be served fuel. According to the information given for yourself you are only 13 !

BM597 was based there from May 1942 with 315 Sqn until February 1943 with 317 Sqn. I’m in contact with a number of Poles who with the various Sqns during this time.

I know a bit about Woodvale post-war
It was the base for the THUM flight (Temperature and Humidity) through the fifties and sixties, which is why I was lucky enough as a youngster to have Spitfires, then Mosquitos flying over my house in the Liverpool suburbs.
Once I moved out to virtually on the approach they were operating Meteors.
My first flight in a RAF aircraft was from Woodvale. (Chipmunk of the AEF Flight)
It is possibly the least GA-friendly aerodrome in the country. To take my little Piper in there would cost £56. They won’t allow me to stay overnight and they won’t sell me fuel.

I’d get hold of a copy of the book referred to above and drop Aldon P. Ferguson a line. I wrote to him years ago when researching the history of a particular Meteor TT20 a/c. I got a very helpful reply down to the pilot, time of departure and so forth. The bloke seems to know his stuff.
