Hello All,
Does anyone know the RAAF Squadrons (particularly the Lincoln and Dakota Sqns) that were detached to Broome, WA, in June to November 1952?
Any help gratefully received.
TIA

John, Hi,
Many thanks for that info – much appreciated. Do you know if the Sqn ORBs for the period are with the Australian Nat Archives – or are they elsewehere?

Hi,
Two RAAF squadrons that flew Lincolns in the early 1950s were No. 1 Sqdn. and No. 6 Sqdn.
No.38 Sqdn. RAAF flew Dakotas in the early 1950s and 36 Sqdn. had them from march 1953, there may have been other RAAF squadrons with these aircraft then but that’s all the information I have at the moment.
cheers,
-John

OK, so nobody seems to know which RAAF a/c were at Broome in Jun-Nov 52. So can I put my question another way? Which RAAF Sqns were equipped with Lincolns and Dakotas in Jun-Nov 52?
I am attempting to find the Australian airborne Met Recce capabilities for Op HURRICANE (The UK’s first nuclear bomb) exploded on the Montebello Is on 3 Oct 52. The Australians also apparently provided the airborne Met Recce element of Op TOTEM (2 Tests at Emu Field, nr Maralinga) in Oct 53.
The airborne Met Recce element for the next tests (Op MOSAIC at Montebello) May/Jun 56 was provided by RAF 269 Sqn Shacks (with 202 Sqn MAOs) based at Darwin.
The Australians seem to be rather reticent about the Met developments between TOTEM and MOSAIC. I suspect there was some high level “grief”. On-line publications by the Australian BoM in 2001 seem to indicate that whatever happened then still rankles in Oz today.
We search simply for the truth – or the nearest approximation thereto that can be found.
