RAAF Williamtown Airshow

Anyone going? According to the advert the last public display of the F1-11 so I could hardly pass up the end of an era, I will be there on Sunday.

Wardie, you put me to shame with your excellent photos.

All the best Paul

Paul, it was not my intention to shame your photos. Unfortunately you had crappy shooting conditions to cope with. I also would have struggled to get better shots on Sunday. I don’t know if you have Lightroom or Photoshop but you would be surprised what a few tweaks will make to your shots.

I have adjusted one of your shots from above as an example. This was underexposed due to the bright background fooling the cameras light meter. If you have an issue with this I will taken it down asap.

But a crowd pleaser – they were v low on the Sunday over the 2 Squadron hangar and crowd.

And fast!

Indeed, I was sitting at the Connie overwing exit row doing a spot of planning for Monday’s departure and I had to lift my legs up to let one through!!

G’day 😉

The four Hornet disply is very impressive going by the one I saw at Amberley last year. Max

Yes – was very impressive, but no pyros this year due public having to cross runway from the car parks. But a crowd pleaser – they were v low on the Sunday over the 2 Squadron hangar and crowd.

Feather #3 I agree, it was the best airshow I have ever been to, my friend and I think it was well worth the trip up from Melbourne.

CanberraA84-232 I wish I was going but do not have the right history to be included.

An animation of one of the F-111 Dump & Burn Demos from the show. He was performing a touch and go when he lit it up as he lifted off the deck. Unfortunately being a short **** I couldn’t get him on the deck but caught him as he came over the crowd.

Note the lead aircraft in the first group formation photo.

Well done. Wondered how long it would take you to notice. :o:D

I’d say it was one of the best military airshows I’ve seen in a lifetime, especially in a country without the variety which can be enjoyed in Europe or sheer numbers in the US.

It should be noted that Saturday was the better day for sunshine, but the fighter/bomber formations had a couple of changes between the days [e.g. the Boomerang had trouble keeping up on Saturday and was more comfortable with the bombers on Sunday.]

The RAAF has a policy of one big defence airshow each year; next will be RAAF Edinburgh SA. Avalon will also be a part of the RAAF 90th celebrations in 2011.

Finally, it was Akko’s finale as FA-18 demo pilot in the [now know as] “classic” Hornet and he closed the show both days. A very energetic and suitable farewell!!

G’day 😉

Looks like a fantastic airshow Paul.. excellent variety. And that Sabre looks stunning in those markings.

Is the Hudson a flyer?

Yes it was great – 4 Mustangs flying, Spit VIII, Boomerang, Meteor, Sabre. Unfortunately the 2 P-40s couldn’t make it.
Hudson, Catalina, Neptune, unfortunately the Canberra is being rested for a while.
Last airshow for the F-111, went out in style with plenty of dump & burns – being WFS in December. First show of the Super Hornet – noisy, now I am really deaf.

Yes i know about the Sabre, just commenting on the markings. But the Hudson is a new one on me, and glad to hear its a flyer.

Also interesting to see ‘Winston’ with a set of tanks fitted.

The Sabre is the world’s only flying CAC Sabre, an RAAF Museum aircraft operated by the Temora Aviation Museum in co-operation with the RAAF, and the Hudson is also the world’s only airworthy example (of a very historically important type) owned and operated by the Temora museum.

Hi Paul,

You have overcast skies in Oz? 😮

It isn’t like that in Neighbours:diablo:

Seriously though, looks to have been an interesting and varied display and great pics

Well I had a great day at the airshow, probably the best I have ever been to, here are some photos, sorry that they all look grey but the overcast did not help things.
