Rackhouse Aerodrome

Not wishing to blow sunshine up my own defueling receptacle, but I have been constantly picking away at a few folks involved with Wythenshawe Park in Manchester with regards to some sort of acknowledgement of the hugely important contribution to aviation which was made across the road from the front gate.

(clickey).

It seems now that there is going to be a blue plaque erected at the site, commemorating the fact that it was the very first municipally owned, commercial aerodrome in the UK.

My Mummy says that I am a clever boy and I make her very proud, +5 house points to Spartabus!

As far as I know, Rackhouse was granted the first commercial licence for a UK municipal airport in 1929. This predated the licence at Shoreham.

Private flying had of course been underway at Shoreham for many years prior to this but Rackhouse beat it to the commercial licence.

It’s good that a blue plaque is going to be installed, but I thought that Shoreham was the first municipal aerodrome in the UK.
