Radio4 – Increase in Russian espionage

Hello,

First of all I apologise if I have the etiquette wrong here, I have been an avid reader of this forum for sometime, however I don’t feel I have the knowledge to contribute very much, so I happily lurk in the background enjoying the discussions and debate. I’m not sure if I am permitted to pose a question on my first posting so if not please feel free to delete…

On Sunday I listened to a show on Radio 4 about the resurgence of Russian espionage, see link, part of this covered the increase in patrols by Akula class submarines. In this report it mentions how Royal Navy SSN’s try to shadow these Russian subs and keep them away from the missile boats, it says that as far as the RN is concerned no Russian submarine has ever managed to record the sound signature of a Vanguard class. Is this really feasible that the Russian Navy has never managed to record the sound signature of a RN ballistic missile submarine? If so how likely is it that there is a Russian submarine that Western Navies have not been able to obtain a signature on? Where all of the Typhoons recorded? By the very nature of this business I’m not sure this could ever be answered conclusively.

Finally the article makes reference to a recent photo, released by the Pentagon, of an Akula on the surface off the Eastern seaboard of the US, can anyone post this picutre or provide a link?
Thank you.

It really depends on what you want to believe. There are russian books with nice stories about avoiding NATO/USA partols, monitoring task groups or subs undetected and so on. Also there are incidents like K-324 or the collision with Kitty Hawk in 1984. But i doubt that any good information about your questions is available in open sources.
And welcome to the forum.
