RAF Attacks on Tirpitz 70th Anniversary

In the Spring of 1942, the RAF flew three operations to attack Tirpitz as she lay moored in Fættenfjord near Trondheim in Norway. 60 airmen lost their lives.

March & April 2012 mark the 70th Anniversary of these attacks.

On 30th March candles were lit on the graves of the airmen who lost their lives and now lie in Stavne (Trondheim) Cemetery at midnight, the approximate time four of the crews were lost.

Over the weekend of 28th & 29th April a small ceremony was held at both the memorial to the airmen at Fættenfjord and the memorial at the location where Halifax W1053 crashed. Wreaths were laid at both in addition to a wreath being laid at Stavne cemetery.

We will remember them.

Hi Linzee.

Good to see this remembered and I know how important this is to you. The photograph of the Cemetery by candlelight is very evocative. I urge anyone with an interest to take a look at Linzee’s website.

I think we owe each other an email or two.

Regards,
