I’m off to RAF Benson this morning, first time in must be 25 years or more. Im on Council business today so I’ll guess there wont be much time to stand and remember those great ‘At home’ days. I’ll guess its changed a lot considering its all egg beaters now.

Shame really as its quite an impressive bit of kit.
Shame it doesn’t have a role yet though, too big to replace Puma, too small to replace Chinook. Supposed to be CSAR but not fitted for the role.
Despite that it was good in Bosnia so I am told.

Umm 1962, I was probably there as my Dad took me to all the displays from the age of 0, however I was 4 that year and can’t really recollect, unfortunately, what sounds to have been a fantastic display.
Bit different today, fixed wing comprises of a handfull of Grob Tutors, the occasional bizjet and of course a plastic PR19 at the gate.
Rotary wing does not fair much better either, 28 sqn have 13 Merlins, 9 of which I saw in various states of maintenance today, some deep. The Flt Lt that talked to us was not very complimetary about the aircraft.
In comparison 32 sqn have 13 Pumas, 6 of which were serviceable today, plus 2 in Basra, 2 in Bosnia and I thought he said 1 in Aldergrove.

You’ve struck a chord with me on this one. I too used to be a regular at the Benson Battle of Britain At Home Days, and excellent they were too. The one that sticks most in my memory is 1962 when the French Air Force came over in force, with two Super Mysteres, Paris, Noratlas and a lovely Vautour 2B in the staic park. Happy days!
