RAF Bentley Priory

An interesting and very sad link in this 70th anniversary year of the Battle of Britain:

I had a long telephone call yesterday from Lord Dowding’s step-son in the South of France and I know he is passionate about this place.

I attended a recent lecture given by a member of the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust. The plan is to sell the site for conversion into luxury flats with a clause that important parts must be refurbished and kept open to the public. A deal was put together last year but on the very day of signing the company put in a lower bid and so the whole thing fell through. As far as I know the MoD are still looking for a new developer.
Rest assured, the trust have infuential people on their side and are determined that the history there will not be forgotten.

I have had the pleasure of attending a flight safety course at Bentley Priory a few years ago. A fantastic place to visit – it really felt like going back in time.

What a shame such a unique and historical RAF station has gone.

Unfortunately in this case it would have been difficult for the MOD to justify keeping open this particular station, despite it’s important connections with RAF history.

The Bentley Priory Trust will no doubt ensure that the historical buildings are kept alive in a manner befitting the stature of the place.

Perhaps one of the councilers can book it as a second home allowance, least that way we would be getting value for money from out taxes:diablo:

That’s the first time I have ever seen inside the building. It looks absolutely beautiful. One wonders what it was like in wartime.

It will be a shame if this has to be locked away behind closed doors.

Thanks for posting.

We published a history of the place a few years back for the local council – been out of print for a long while

Fantastic pics, I think it was awful how little the MoD considered BentleyPriory, but selling off the family silver springs to mind, spurred on by the fact that it must be some of the most expensive real estate in the UK. It is a pity that value has to considered over heritage all the time these days, or am I being old fashioned.
I believe it was to be opened to the public before the redevelopment into flats etc was to take place.
Did anyone here visit, or know of the current status of the place?
