320psi, Peter and all….
XR716 AQ one of the 2 display F.3s for 1987, went to Cottesmore and the other ex display airframe AR XP741 went to the CTE at RAF Manston.
Think XR718 went to Wattisham IIRC, And may still survive in some form or other……

Thanks MJR are 724 wings in need of replacement soon then? What are the longterm plans for her as she cant stay outside forever?
By: mjr - 24th September 2006 at 00:46
peter,
the set of wings in the crate are spares for 724, and the set on the ground are a set of Saudi f53 wings from Zf577 53-668, for use in LINCAIR’s T55 project.
By: Peter - 23rd September 2006 at 15:00
What are the plans for those wing sections? Spares for 724?

Regarding the picture of the Lightning wings in the packing crates Guzzineil, which building was underneath where they are standing?
I guess i will have to have a trip out there sometime soon, now that I’am back in Lincolnshire.

Xs899 being cut up, now thats an unbelivable sight.!! There is a 5 minute sequence on “Thunder and LIghtnings, a quest for power” ( Thunder city’s dvd) of the Cranfield ships being broken up by Nev and co. The longest sequence is of 899 resisting to the very last, whilst the muncher driver tries to snap the Starboard wing off. If you have ever wondered how strong a lightning really is, that sequence pretty much sums it up. Unfortunately I cant put the clip up on Key, copywright etc.

Does anyon remember the old battle HQ at Binbrook across from the crash gate in the woods? My sister and I were all over and around it but you couldnt go down more than 4 or 5 steps as it was full of water?

Nice pics Damien, any more??I take it that wall that is demolished would not have been original? Do these huts still survive?

Living not too far away from Binbrook I spent a lot of time there watching the activities so too speak, many happy hours sitting at the western end of the runway gave you an insight into the time the crews put in most days on circuit practice and from there with a steady hand you could on clear days see out towards the ranges, sad like so many other well known airfields that Binbroook has fallen too the accountants pencil.

I was at the Last Last Lightning Show in 1987 with the 45Sqn/TWCU Tornado as ground crew. We had a great time at the place, (nice sign outside the 5 Sqn line-hut “Thru these doors….”- looked good on our crewroom wall !) but how sad to see it in this state now, not unlike the current use of our own old base at Honington. And the Lightning stuck outside after all the effort made to fly it in from Shawbury, the guys involved must be gutted to have to face this situation. No taxi way and hangars presumably priced beyond their reach and probably stuffed with grain. Hats of to you for not throwing in the towel in the face of such odds. If only we had that sort of dedication to historical artifacts at the higher levels of the museum at DX. 🙁

There should be another steam locomotive there somewhere, an LMS Crab.
Neither has had much (if any) work done on them since arriving.

Dan
