Waddington was “Slangword”, 467 squadron’s code was Mozart, 463’s was Fuller.

Elsham Wolds

In the book ‘No moon tonight’ when the radio operator calls their home base of RAF Elsham Wolds it is ‘Hazel Control’. Hazel could be its callsign.

I have never seen the airfield callsigns printed anywhere, the one I had down for St Mawgan was from a transcript of a conversation between an RAF controller and USAF B-24 that crashed. Unfortunatly I lent it to someone, etc etc.
There must be a definitive list somewhere, plus aircrew must know what they called up.
Same goes for station codes, but alot of these can be found on Robert Trummans Control Towers site.

Don’t suppose they are mentioned in the “Action Stations” Books at all – I havent got them Im afraid so I cant check

Sorry – I consulted what is IMHO the airfield ‘bible’ for you – Military Airfields in the British Isles by Willis and Holmes (1990) but whilst it lists just about everything else – no joy on the codenames

I need to rediscover St Mawgans callsign, I believe it was something like ‘Manby’, does anyone know for sure?
Did the airfields retain the same callsign name throughout the war?
Did the callsigns ever get used post-war?

believe raf breighton, 4 group, was nosmo.

Thanks for the response so far. There is still alot not known such as the Pathfinder stations and No 4 Group in Yorkshire.

RAF Winthorpe

Station 52 – RAF Winthorpe was “Clickheel”.

I believe that Newark Air Museum also later used the phrase “Operation Clickheel” as the name of their fund raising campaign to generate the partnership funding for their HLF project.
