I am researching the history of RAF Chipping Norton. Can anyone provide any information, pictorial or anecdotal to assist with this web project. For example, there are rumours that an all black unmarked Lancaster flew from there for a while circa 1944 and was said to be part of an A bomb project, can anyone expand on this?

Steve,
Without boring the rest of the forum the answer to your ex-employer question is …………Crap. I’m out on the 8th July.

Bit of a couple of odd suggestions as you’ve done the sensible stuff:
Why not see what you can dig up at the Centre For Oxfordshire Studies? (www.oxfordshire.gov.uk – & go ‘heritage, libraries, Museums’).
Oxfordsire Aviation Society? I know they exist, don’t have their correct name contact details, but dig a little…
Chippy has it’s own website with a Forum – might be worth a post there – www.chippingnorton.net IIRC.
I don’t have any info you probably haven’t already got, but I can point you at the ‘official’ heritage sources – that’s what I work for; yes, in Oxon.
Good luck.

Thanks Phil, I’ve already got that one. I’m trying to track down some uncovered stuff. I posted an ad last year and got many replies saying that “their dad/grandad had photo’s etc but they threw them away when he died”. It seems there is precious little left but I’ll keep digging away. Thanks anyway.

PS what’s the atmosphere like at OMT now ?

Steve,
I’ve got somewhere a copy of ‘Airfields of Oxfordshire’ I’ll see if I can scan the pages for you or tell you who the publisher is so as you can get a copy.
Alternatively you can always pop into OMT and copy the pages if I bring it in.
As a policy I don’t lend books out, no matter how well I know the person, so its nothing personal !!.
