RAF Christmas 1918

An album of post cards has recently come to us from a deceased family members estate. A large number of cards are from the great war 1914-18 and in particular there are a number sent home from the western front, they make poignant reading. One that caught my eye is the attached from RAF Shorncliffe written by the airman to his wife in Bradford prior to leaving for the front. Amusingly some things even after 90 years for us chaps don’t change, as the writer apologises for not having written lately, and goes on to say that he is sending his laundry home! Another card says conditions are very poor in France and lots of casualties have occurred, with no respite from the shelling. The writer ends the card by saying “Please pray for me”. The cards provide a fascinating yet moving personal insight into one mans war, which unlike many he was fortunate to survive to come home and lead a full life to old age.

It’s so difficult for us later generations to really understand times like that which were so different from our own, and sometimes I think personal items like this say a lot more than all those erudite history books. Also makes you realise just how transient Life is.

What an interesting reminder of life at the time. Can you post some more please Tango Charlie – who is George, do you know much more about him?
