Can anyone give me information on what RAF Fighter Command did after the Battle of Britain, I also need information about the end of the war, aircraft exchanges with the Americans and bomber escorts.
Thanks

RE: RAF Fighter Command
Slight correction time!
Jeffrey Quill wrote ‘Spitfire- A Test Pilots Story’
Alex Henshaw wrote ‘Sigh for a Merlin’
I knew when I put a the post there was something not quite right. I suddenly remembered, this morning. The price of old age!!!

RE: RAF Fighter Command
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-03-02 AT 11:35 PM (GMT)]Wasn’t Fighter Command, as such, split into Air Defence of Great Britain (ADGB) & 2nd Tactical Air Force (2nd TAF), from November 1943, to the end of WW2?

ps Geoffrey Quill ‘Sigh of a Merlin’, I think that’s the correct title, you’re after Rabie. (very good & interesting book!).

RE: RAF Fighter Command
If you’re working on a project why not go to the RAF Website at WWW.raf.mod.uk/rafhome.html you’ll find loads of info under the history section.

RE: RAF Fighter Command
For the rest of the war fighter command continued to provide air defence for the UK as well as escorting bomber and fighter bomber sweeps against mainland europe. Post war they reverted to an air defence role initially with the Meteor, then with the Hunter and Javelin during the 50’s and early 60’s. By the early 60’s these had given way to the Lightning. Fighter and Bomber Commands were amalgamated in the mid 1960’s to become Strike Command.

RE: RAF Fighter Command
not being an expert at all i’ll say this.
intially fighter sweeps which were a ww1 tactic. fighters went from kent to the pas de calais area. they tried to find the luftwaffe but weren’t very sucsesful.
then the luftwaffe got the fw-190 which caused them problems till better spitfires came out.
all i’ve read is jeffery quin or quil ??? the spitfire test pilot’s autobiography and a book ion biggin hill.
