Out of curiosity I tried to identify the aircraft type and squadron of a shot-down ‘British’ fighter in some German propaganda newsreel footage uploaded onto YouTube.
It didn’t prove much of a challenge as I had the squadron code (FU) and somehow knew the wrecked fuselage belonged to a Spitfire but can anybody take it further?
Code FU was RAAF 453 Squadron.

I had a look through the Spitfire production list to see if I could ID that particular aircraft for you. It made a very sobering read as the number of possible candidates quickly increased. It was obviously a very dangerous time for 453 Sqn (and others of course). I’m afraid I couldn’t come to any real conclusion as to the exact aircraft shown in your pic.
