Does any one know the serial number and fate of the Vulcan that was stored at Finningley during the late 80’s, I think she was due to be the gate guard but this was scrapped due to the size of her.

I sat in the co-pilots seat in the Nimrod AEW when they did full power engine ground runs, what an amazing sound, not too dissimlar to the vulcan noise i thought. Finningley was a massive place that had lots of money spent on it i believe, why they closed it i’m not sure most likely to its second line role, also it didnt have any HAS buildings so it becoming front line again was unlikely. Around South Yorks was rich pickings for RAF bases, Finningley, Lindholme, Bircotes, Worksop, Doncaster, Firbeck, Gamston and Snaith not far away, now all gone Finningley been the last:(

A mate of mine remembers chopping the Vulcon to bits in 88- Still amazes me that they closed Finingley yet left dumps that no one wants to get posted to(thats Marham to you) open. Was’nt it twice the size of Odiham?

What about the nimrod and F4J anything saved from them?
Some of the fuselage of the nimrod ended up at warton for testing. And the phantom was ZE351 which was scrapped in 1995 from memory.
