Britain is preparing to get rid of a significant portion of its Hercules C-130J fleet to help pay for the expansion of the Royal Air Force’s C-17 fleet beyond the five aircraft to which it already committed.

The Ministry of Defence has four of the much larger C-17s on lease from the U.S. Air Force and is acquiring a fifth aircraft under plans announced in a defense white paper last year.

Now, though, equipment capability planners say they can expand the fleet to seven of the Boeing-built strategic airlifters if they can raise the cash to fund the move by leasing out the under-used, short C-130J airframes.
