Does anyone know the respective fuselage diameters of the Herald and the Andover (presumably the latter is the same as the HS 748)?

There was a high winged 748 proposed for the Indian Air Force I believe… the 758…

The Herald airframe looks alot more suitable for military conversion, no need for a knealing undercarriage etc. But of course Sir Fred wouldn’t be nationalised!

Quite right. My comment was based on a photo of a fuselage under construction that didn’t show the lower part. Just goes to show you cannot be too careful!

Sabrejet, I have failed to answer the stated question, unfortunately I can not give an exact answer to the question.
That dimension on my drawing is not very clear. But by using the scale on the drawing I have concluded it is either 8′ 8″ or 8′ 9″ OD. This would fit in with the 8′ 1″ given as the ID.

The RAF didn’t have Heralds: but they were considered favourites for a buy which eventually was given to Avro for the Andover. There’s a recent article which deals with the procurement saga in some detail.
Thanks for the Herald diameters: I’ve been informed that the Avro 748 had an internal diameter of 8ft 1 in.

Herald brochures from the 1960s give a maximum internal diameter of 8ft 8in for an external diameter of 9ft 2in. The fuselage seems to be circular in cross section, but obviously floor and ceiling mean the floor to ceiling height is less and in fact varies depending on position from 6ft 4in to 5ft 11in.
