Hi all,
I am trying to research an airman that was shot down in July 1940 and ended up staying at the RAF Hospital at Halton for some weeks. (FO C D Whittingham 151 squadron).
Can any forum users tell me how or where I could locate information relating to his injuries or his time at Halton?
Unfortunately I have been unable to identify the location where he is buried and consequently cannot get access to his death certificate to write to RAF records.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Cheers
Gerry

Hi Robdd1,
I have the image from ancestry from the royal aero club thanks.
You have come up trumps with Kirkcolm though for which I am extremely grateful.
I have now managed to find a copy of the register of his death online and can go about ordering aa copy death certificate.
I am deeply indebted to you.
Many thanks

Had a quick look on web for you, there is a picture of him from 1931 from the royal aero club. Have downloaded if want.
The only real info I can see has a Charles Derek Whittingham living in Devon at Shorton Cottage Paignton, Passing away 08 April 1958 at Valleyfield Kirkcolm? This links in with a trip in 1954 on the ship ‘Venus’ with his mother Henrietta.
Do these seem any closer to details you may have?

Hi robdd1 and Geoff,
Many thanks for your replies.
I purchased Whittinghams medals from DNW’s with a view to completing research into him.
I have managed to make contact with the family who can’t assist really as Whittingham died so long ago that family members from that era are no longer around. They were not able to tell me where he is buried which was a shame as I wanted to place flowers on his grave.
They were able to provide a good photograph of him which was much appreciated.
I went to Malta in April to try and research his service with 261 Squadron. Unfortunately very little is available regarding 261 squadron but I collated what i could.
Geoff, Hi, hope you are good. I recall that I followed up this Oxford link before but failed to locate the district in Oxford where his death was registered and subsequently couldn’t obtain a death certificate to forward to RAF records.
Once again many thanks for your efforts on my behalf which is appreciated.

Would this be your man?
County is given as ‘Oxfordshire’.
Not being signed up for this website, I can’t access the full details from home, but at Local Studies at B/heath library you can acces the website for free. Would you like me to check it out tomorrow?
Checking on other website, found this reference for a D Cert –
WHITTINGHAM Charles D, Oxford, 6b/1203, march quarter 1958
