RAF Hudson crash 16/01/42 near Bacton, Norfolk

Does anyone have any info on this crash site? There is a memorial nearby with the names of the crew, but the reason I need to know more is that a new pipeline is to be installed just 50m away from the crash site and we need to establish the risk of ordnance being on board, i.e. was it on its way out to a mission or returning? This may help us (Anglian Water) in determining which side of the site we lay the pipe.

Many thanks

The Norfolk Civil Defence telephone log has the following reference;
“16/1/42 Hudson crashed south of Bacton, 4 dead, 4 bombs on board”

Should have been cleared at the time but wasn’t always the case.

The memorial was rededicated last Thursday (4 November 2005).

Suggest you have a word with Mick Jennings, the CRO at RAF Coltishall who was in attendance.

Thanks Ross, that’s invaluable info. May they rest in peace on this appropriate day.
