Hi All,
As some of you might already know I and a few of us mainers are in the process of starting up a new Musuem that will feature the Cold War time period here in Maine.
While working on some display boards for Loring AFB I came across a page talking about how the RAF was going to be TDY at Loring AFB. The time period of this would be late 50s thru mid 60s off and on.
Now what I’m trying to find is the following,
1 Squadrons that would have been at Loring
2 Any photos
3 Aircraft type
4 How long were the TDYs
Also while I was going thru some incedint reports I came acroos a small report about a RAF aircraft that had a run in with a Moose. now if anyone knows anything about Maine and are State Animal then you just don’t have a run in with a Moose, its more of a collision. Would like to find more info on this if possiable.
Once again thanks with any information that you can provide

TDY is also Tour of Duty !
You were right, Locobuster

My father (career U.S. Marine) always used “TDY” instead of “tour of duty”, I thought maybe it was just one of his foibles when I was corrected in the replies above. Thanks for the clarification, Martin.

I have no more pics sorry, just memories of a great trip to the land of P2V’s, always recall though how one Navy servicemen in the Acey Ducey bar said ‘Hey, are you guys with those Lancasters out there!’ 😮

The first transatlantic flight of a British jet bomber was made from RAF Marham to Loring AFB by a Valiant on 02Sep1956.
Doesn’t the Canberra count? B2 WD932 flew from Aldergrove to Gander in 4hr 37min, 21/3/1951.

201 Squadron MR3 Shackletons spent from 13th April through to 28th April 1963 at USN Brunswick, Maine as guests of the USN. Our CO Wing Commander Rodney Roche flew his aircraft in despite suffering leg injuries from a previous skiing accident.

I always thought TDY was temporary duty!
Papa,
Your correct, its temporary duty. It seems that when the RAF was at Loring they were their for 6 week tours. I know that at least five Vulcans came to Loring because their was a story in The Bangor Times about them.
