RAF Initials

I have just bought an RAF sector clock with M.C.A stencilled on the bottom door, initials that I haven’t seen before. They have been added in the usual manner of the time. Can anyone tell me what they might stand for?

With thanks,

Bob

Probably belonged to the ‘Ministry of Civil Aviation’

just a thought
I have seen this before m.c.a on property of marshals at Cambridge aerospace
They had lots of RAF type equipment marked with company identifier

I don’t recall seeing stuff marked this way when I worked there.
Most of the older stuff was marked MFS (Marshall flying school), then it was marked MCE (marshall of cambridge engineering), and then when the aircraft side split to be a seperate entity called Marshall aerospace, stuff was marked MA.

Thank you everyone. I think that Ken, above, has the answer. The clock was made in 1941 but these clocks remained in general RAF use until the mid 1950’s when many were sold off. This one has been in a pub for some decades until sold at auction 2 years ago.

But if someone has another thought, please tell me.

The outfit we today know and love as BAA entered the world 10/44 as the Ministry of Civil Aviation, taking over from RAF (part or all of) such sites as Northolt, Heathrow. 1953 renamed MTCA. Does 1945-53 fit the pedigree of your item?

No, not the stock code number ( stores or part number ) but a code for everything under one person’s inventory. All equipment issued to a section had to be under the control of somebody, generally a SNCO, He was accountable for everything issued to him under that inventory and it was ( still is ?? ) common practice to identify it as belonging to that inventory a) for inventory checks and b) to deter people from relocating it to their section / squadron etc. For example, in this case, everything in that section may have been marked ‘M.C.A’ , tables, chairs, clocks, telephones, filing cabinets etc.

I had initially thought Maritime & Coastguard Agency but that wasn’t set up until 1998.. 🙂

Thanks Slipstream, but it’s not that. The inventory code for clocks was usually 21B/118.

Possibly an inventory code ? Equipment & furniture was generally issued to an inventory and the holder was responsible for it – hence the items would be marked with that code.
