The prospect of another air show at Leuchars in 2012 , was thrown into doubt this week after the local Fife press reported that the Armed Forces Minister, Nick Harvey, (Coalition Govt, Lib Dems), stated that future air shows at the base could not be taken for granted. Only last month, AVM Sir Stephen Dalton, had said the air shows would continue at Leuchars while plans were made to transfer the base from the RAF to the Army. This stance was also welcomed by Micheal Moore, (the Scottish Secretary, also Lib Dems), MSP for Berwick.
As is already known among the aviation enthusiasts north of the border, the Leuchars air show provides the only major regular show in Scotland, attracting over 50,000 visiters each year giving the Scots a great and varied spectacular, above all giving them the chance to view the latest fast jets from the UK and abroad as well as other interesting hardware on show.
If the base has to close in 2014 for RAF use, then I am hoping that two more shows could be planned, with a grand finale for the 2013 one. After that, Leuchars will surely be missed on the air show calender, not forgetting the RAF personnel based there over the years and the local civilian population for various reasons.
