‘The combination of both flared and round exhausts goes back to at least the 1950s, when LA255 was the gate Guard at RAF Cardington’

I was commenting on the lack of exhausts full stop ! The picture from Roy9 seems to illustrate it quite well!

The BBMF probably jacked them during the Spits sojourn at Coningsby………

Hopefully it’s as complete inside as it was when I sat in her back in the 1990’s!

I have the Haynes book on restoring a Spitfire and IIRC this aircraft is featured in it regarding a survey for restoration. It was
completely stripped of paint after suffering quite a bit of hangar rash.

On the Port side the rear 3 stubs are round and the forward ones blank. It was like this at Leuchars in 2012. It may have happened when the aircraft was stripped for repainting and some exhausts may have been kept for spares

This was restored by the BBMF wasn’t it?
Cees

I think they gave her a clean and brush up when looking after her whilst No 1 was disbanded

I was working at Wittering at the time of the move to Cotts and the station commander was going nuts that this spit had gone

And I can tell an identical story to that in relation to its proposed ‘loan’ to Tangmere Museum way back in 1990-ish!

I never did actually get to the bottom of who ‘owned’ it, and not sure I ever checked it out – whether it was/is the MOD or whether it was/is on the inventory of RAFM stock (and thus a non MOD airframe) or the property of the 1 Sqn Association I know not, which did seem a bit unlikely. Doubtless Mark 12 will know.

Yes – it belongs to 1 Squadron association .

Whether or not they own it depends on who you talk to!

Preparations we once made to place it on loan at Newark Air Museum and the Association was supposedly stopped from completing the loan by another ‘owner’! 🙁

Must have been about Sept 2014 when 1 Squadron went to lossiemouth. The Army took over Leuchars in March 2015.

It was actually never on the gate at Wittering. It was tucked away for most of the time in 1 Sqn’s hangar and was only wheeled out to stand outside for a while during the summer months.

Does anybody know the approximate date LA255 moved from Leuchars to Lossiemouth?
