RAF Museum – Aircraft Service History Index Cards

My understanding is that the RAF Museum holds on index cards the history of every aircraft to have served the RAF.

Question or rather questions: (a) how many aircraft/index cards are there, (b) what size are these cards, (c) do some aircraft have more than one card and (d) how does one go about ordering copies?

Also, if anyone has a photocopy or photograph of such an index card, if they could post them on this forum I’d be greatful. Doing a bit of research 😉 Your help in this matter would be apprecated.

Best Wishes

With a little bit of patience, I have always found this service very helpful, & efficient, you need to be able to understand what some of the abbreviations stand for though, some of the original hand writing also can need a lot of working out, in most cases only one form for each A/C

Dusty, youre totally spot on, the handwriting can be appalling and ofcourse, with some aircraft their age doesnt help either.

AM 78 records

Philip,

If you drop an email to the lady below and she should be able to help you. I ordered the AM78 for an aircraft and you can have 2 copies of that form for free, theyre photocopies of the original. As for other documents, this lady should know and be able to answer your questions.

Download the following document, all the details are on there…

http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/research/documents/e-Info%20Sheet%205%20Aircraft.doc

Charges work out at 20 pence per sheet plus VAT (and postage if your not visiting). From memory all the Form 78’s (movement cards) are on around 130 16mm microfilms, probably about 2000 aicraft cards on each film! They’re ordered by year and then aircraft type. There’s an equivalent collection for accidents too, Form 1180s.

More general info can be found here http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/london/research/faq.cfm
