RAF Museum, Cosford – 9th Apr 06

Had a visit with my brother to Cosford on Sunday morning with a visit to MAM at Coventry in the afternoon. The trip was arranged before the BA debacle came to a head. We spent the day dodging showers, rain, hail and snow. Hope you like.

Images taken Sat 22/04/06 at Cosford.

If your thinking that some of the pics of the 707 are at a funny angle its cus i had to stand with the camera above my head to get the shots over fence. Thought anything was better than nothing.

Lightning still has the bullet off, must be nearly a year that its been like that!!!

Is there any reason why the aircraft didn’t go to Wroughton? Presumably that option was considered.

They have the room there and given the distances and road systems the costs would be about the same or less than the current destinatoins.

We wouldn’t have had a unique aircraft, the 707, being destroyed, apart from the non unique bit that is. The continuance of type duplication would help to ensure more secure existence of the types concerned.

Last time I was at Brooklands the VC10 fuselage section was in a terrible state, do they have the resource to take on another?

Just asking

Thanks Kev35, would tend to agree with your comments about the 707 and the movement of airframes tomorrow, ill post pics here in a bit. Should be going again next weekend so that should confirm whats happened.

Been as the airshow is coming up in 6-7 weeks i would have thought that everying will be moved/scrapped/shreaded by then to leave room for the market.

Think you will find that only cockpit of 707 is being saved as I to was at Cosford today, also it is true to say thatthe 707 looks a mess but can be said of anything being dismantled this is down to the contractors not RAFM

Seeing as how the only remaining glazing in the 707 is that in the cockpit and the fuelage windows as far back as the leading edge, it does sort of cry out that the nose only is being saved. It does paint a different picture to that of the notices hung on the fence. I would imagine the separation of the nose and forward fuselage will happen soon with the destruction of the rest of the aeroplane following.

The Viscount is fenced but at least it is being dimantled, transported and reassembled. Just a thought, when the Trident goes, will the hardstand be used for the Neptune?

Also been told that the start date for the beginning of the transfer of airframes to the new building is tomorrow.

Got plenty of photo’s today but will post them on Planetalk and leave Rob to post his here. Mine can be found at…..

Well the notice seems clear enough and I would accept it at face value if the RAFM hadn’t previously made statements that the “BA Collection was on the move” meaning they were intending to chop off the cockpits and scrap the rest!
It’s like pulling up a couple of portholes from the Deep and saying you have “preserved the Titanic”.
There’s been a basic lack of honesty here by the RAFM (and BA). Who can now believe anything they say ?

I am glad you feel that they will all be looked after in their new homes. At least as 3 of them will be only small components they will no doubt be inside.

I could not have put it better myself Papa Lima, at least they are going somewhere to be looked after seeing as BA are no longer intrested.

For “lack of BA maintenance support” read lack of interest or rampant apathy, mainly on the part of the bean counters

Couldn’t both staff statements be correct?
Eviction because of lack of BA maintenance support?

Shoal Hill Tavern?

I do believe I may have been err….. ‘invited’ to leave there once in the dim and distant past of my youth.

It seems that even now the demise/dispersal of the BA Collection is causing problems. I refer to the signage on the fence about the 707 going to EF in it’s entirety while as far as I am aware, EF are only expecting the cockpit and a section of fuselage.

Interesting talking to the staff at Cosford. They are led to believe that this action is being taken directly as a result of the fact that BA withdrew all maintenance support five years ago. But they have said that visitors from BA are relating to them that BA staff are told the BA Collection is moving because the RAF Museum are literally evicting them.

I dare say the truth lies somewhere between the two with the VC-10, 707 and Trident the unfortunate victims.
