RAF Museum Cosford Current State of Building

Here is an aerial photo I took that indicates just how big the new hanger will be!

Hi my name is Charlotte Clark and I am an Art and Design student at Stourbridge College.
I am currently looking at working to a commission style brief, and following a previous project about the new hangar at Cosford, I decided that it would be interesting to design a sculptural piece for the new building.
I was wondering if you could help me out with some images of the making of the building (in turn i will share some of mine) and also help me by allowing me to quote your oppinions of the new building. I look forward to hearing from you.
Charlotte Clark

these any use Charlotte? I’ve worked at Cosford for almost 10 yrs now & its made quite a difference to the skyline.I think it’ll fit in, but time will tell,
Dave

I understand the Valiant should have been started to be put back together at the end of September but the RAF Team that stripped it have been taken away on other duty’s I would imagine it will not now be started until the new year.

There has been plenty of opportunity to do something had either

1 – there been the will to do it
or
2 – there was a need to do it

any body corporate will not necessarily take remedial action in response to a third party approach as this is tantamount to an admission of failure on the part of that body corporate

perhaps the old girl is so corroded anyway that it doesn’t really matter whether she’s protected or not.

However, the cost of some heavy duty polythene sheeting and duct tape would have been considerably less than either the cost of the new building ( 😉 ) or the cost of the negative publicity and ill-will generated by the decision to leave the Valiant in pieces and unprotected within the car park

With all due respect it has been waiting, open to the elements with no attempt to provide any cover, since August 17th. How much would a couple of tarpaulins cost?

Not much chance of that TMN time is a big factor now

Thanks Hunterxf382, you have answered a question that has been bugging me about ‘838 since it was at Cosford !

Back on the subject of Cosford, pity they can’t get all four of their Meteors together for a photo-shoot before the NF14 gets hung up !

Easier in terms of maintainance ? One pot of yellow paint to go! The camouflage is ok but the yellow was fun!

WS838 was used as a chase plane at Boscome Down which is why it was painted yellow… Over the years it’s proved impossible to successfully apply the same colour paint whilst at the MAM due to problems with surface reaction so it’s now in a lovely cammo scheme which is far more durable and makes life so much easier in terms of maintenance of this finish….

and, IIRC, it’s a genuine scheme isn’t it Pete? WS838 saw squadron service before it’s role as a chase plane.

The MAM Meteor NF14 was previously at Cosford when it was painted all over yellow – either from its test flying days, or it may even have been the prototype (?).

Pretty sure the museum is open between 26th and 30th December.

The Meteor NF14 was once on show at St. Athan and has been at Cosford for a few years now – see my recent thread with pics taken last Tuesday for its current scheme.

Hi,

Found this thred while surfing & thought you might like to see some recent photographs.

Looks like the collapsed remains of a rusty wartime blister hangar!

Ooo nice, do you know where the Meteor NF11 is from? Could be the one from Midland Air Museum, think theres went a while ago (can’t remember if it was there last time I visited)

MAM example is an NF14… and it certainly hasn’t moved to my knowledge… 😮

Oh and on the subject of Valiant – just had regular RAF Museum update email, which contains a small shot of the Valiant being craned together in a hanger, amongst other shots…
