RAF Museum Hendon

Hi Rob,

hereiwth the photies of one of the many m/c’s used by the RFC. The m/c’s were retained in their civilian colours, and from the black n white photies of vehicles i’ve seen, they do seem to be in different shades!

I’ve got some photies of restored 1stww period vehicles in matt green, bronze green, and satin/gloss green.

Ah excellent, cheers! Looks like most RFC vehicles during WW1 were painted a sort of brown colour then

Cheers, if that’s no problem – was hoping to visit the museum myself in the next two weeks or so but not sure now, also according to the website several parts of the museum tend to get closed off because of lack of staff, sadly, including the areas with these two vehicles. Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

I don’t know if the vehicles are still there as the last time i visited was in 1997! However, if you want some photies of the said vehicles, then i can send them to you.

Apart from the indifferent quality, the last, and I mean last, time I went in there was about 15 or 16 years ago and the prices were astronomical.
We tend to be spoilt living in Derbyshire as prices are noticeably cheaper than further south but at that time I’d only recently moved here from Hertfordshire and couldn’t believe they’d got the nerve to charge so much. I always take sandwiches now.

Touchscreens

The screens do go into detail about Squadrons etc but not specific info about the actual aircraft. I must confess i only looked at the screens for the Harrier and the Tempest.

The Harrier is a Falklnds survivor but no mention of ‘this’ example serving. just a generic overview 🙁

Re: Perches.

The touch screens are excellent however a historic note on the actual air frame would have been nice.

So there is no explanation on why the 262 is marked as Yellow 4 , when post capture photos show it wearing either a Yellow [ or possibly White ] ‘7’ ?
I did hear though that the markings can be ‘peeled’ later should they decide to update them.

Dave

Catering!

No hot food, just a selection of sarnies and cakes, although you do sit on a nice balcony where you can look at the exhibits.

I agree though, the main restaurant is horrendous! I can accept paying over the odds for food if its well prepared and has some taste !

Must try the grass next time 😀

What’s the new cafe like? Hendon desperately needs a decent restaurant, as the ‘food’ provided by the outside catering contract in the main restaurant is abominable. (You’d be better off chewing the grass outside)

Perches.

Home at last! don’t you just love in-laws, looks like ive been beaten to the picture posting, mine are very much similar to mike j’s so i want clog up the thread by posting more..

Now the milestones hanger… on reflection i think it is superb but i can see some purists/enthusiasts not been particularly excited by it, i agree with Lancman there is no logical sequence to the exhibits however the way they are displayed is interesting and the building is bound to be popular with visitors. It does give the keen photographer something different.

I was suprised however at how small the exhibition space is, it seems that a third of the building space is taken up with a reception area, a first floor cafe (thats three at Hendon now!) and a ‘Control Tower’ exhibit which does have a bit of an ‘after thought’ feel to it.

The touch screens are excellent however a historic note on the actual air frame would have been nice.
I loved the Spitfire FSM in the reception area it looked very impressive!

On the way out it seems as though the ‘Historic Hangers and Bomber command Hall have had a bit of housekeeping done and they look superb.

If you stand under the nose of the Lanc looking out towards the Typhoon (yes the pearched one! 😉 ) it is superbly flanked by the Phantom and the Tornado, cracking photo!

Unfortunatly the Graeme White Hanger doesn’t open until 12 and i had to be home by 1! So thats one for next time.

Milestones is an excellent ‘showpiece’ and no doubt opinions will be greatly debated on this forum.

As far as im concerned, well i’d rather see Black 6 on Duxfords flight line and the P51 in the air however i greatly welcome this sort of investment in aviation heritage and i intend to support it!

This along with Duxfords ‘Airspace’ project and TVOC’s Lottery funding are proof that Aviation Heritage is supported and at least these aircraft are not housed in tatty old buildings or outside come to that!

Go along and give your support, it is something to be proud of.

Dez 🙂

Great shots, though sadly I think more than ever that the new building is a totally pointless mish-mash of odd content.

Looking forward to seeing the hangar though, that sounds much more like it!

More Perches than a bird cage!!!

A quick dash down the M1 to Hendon this morning, need to be at the out-laws in half an hour so heres a quick low down.

In a word… ‘SUPERB’

I like the bright airy environment, the fact the airframes are not all squashed together(although that may change) so if you’re into photography go now you will love it.

The viewing balconies are superb with excellent touch screens for further info, the only downside is that the touch screens don’t give examples about the specific airframes!!!!

The perched aircraft look super!!!

more later….
