RAF Museum Scotland?

Without wishing to water down the main two collections , would there be scope to open up a new complex north of the border
to reflect the types operated in Scotland and indeed reflect on some of the unique missions flown from Scotland.

My first thoughts are:

Lockheed Lodestar

Avro Shackleton

Blackburn Buccaneer

Nimrod MR.2

VS Spitfire

Beaufighter

Scottish Aviation Pioneer

Sea King

Great idea , East Fortune is too near the Edinburgh flight paths to be any good for opening as a GA and warbird facility , although I would leave the Museum as it is as it’s a pretty good museum .
Opening a new Museum at Prestwick is a great idea , there is plenty room down there , there are a lot of airframe and propulsion engineers working down there and I would bet there would be a few of them who would volunteer for engineering support of the Museum . It’s also very accessible . I wonder if the RAF Museum would loan some of their stored airframes and perhaps they could persuade the Dundonald chaps to move to Prestwick as they have a superb collection of airframes and they are well mantained ( well worth a visit !!) Maybe the guys from Carlisle would move too ?? .
But it will never happen anyway ( unless the lottery people would part with some cash !!!) but we can dream on anyway

🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

It seems a shame to limit ourselves to the RAF when a large proportion of Scotland’s military aviation history includes the Fleet Air Arm.

We could also have the USAF included in the form of 67th ARS (Hmmm a SA-16B , SH-19 or SC-54 with day-glo orange and yellow bits) or how about doing something about SAL/ RCAF connection with Sabres CF-100’s or CF-104’s.

Anne.

To think I used to run away and hide when silver CF-104s flew over my house…the folly of youth!

Good idea, could add

Sunderland (based at many locations for coastal recco)

Hunter (first entered service at Leuchars)

Lightning (Leuchars again)

SA Bulldog (Prestwick connection)

and the location would have to be west coast, lots of spare space at Prestwick. Much as I like East Fortune, it is the wrong side of Edinburgh 🙂

Having been born and brought up in Scotland I have to say that I think that it’s a FAB idea…the only problem is it will never happen.

I’m afraid those north of the border will have to put up with one rather good Museum at East Fortune (even if it is a sod to get to) and a handful of other smaller collections, all of which deserve our full support.

Tisk…these people in the South East and Midlands (which now includes me). They don’t know their born.

ANNE

By the way…where would you have it? Turnhouse…Somewhere near Glasgow…or how about Prestwick?
