Hi there, i’m looking for information on RAF Nuneaton – it’s now the MIRA (the car testing facility) site with the A5 running on one side of it. It’s not acutally that close to Nuneaton, in fact you can see it from my best mates house at Higham on the Hill, it’s not far from there, according to someone in my history class whos from Stoke Golding, the Church tower there was took down during the war so aircraft that had just took off/were landing wouldn’t hit it! Think I heard somewhere it was a bomber base, any truth in that? Couldn’t find much about it on the internet.

Have a look at ‘Aviation in Leicestershire and Rutland’ by Roy Bonser, MCP Publications.
Chapter on Nuneaton says. ‘No 18 otu 7.0243 – 27.03.43 Wellingtons, No 105 OTU 25.06.43-10.08.43,No 1381 (Transport)Conversion unit 10.08.43 -21.11.45 Wellingtons and Dakotas.
The top 60 feet of the church spire was removed as it was considered a danger to aircraft, the stones were numbered and stored and then replaced after the war.
Alan.
Ps The visual control room was removed from the tower in 1986 and thanks to Richard J Nutt of the Boston Havoc Preservation Trust, was rescued and is now on the top of the control tower at Duxford.
