Thankyou to all its nice to see the pics and updates.I cant get my head over XV500 they should have kept her but yet again the uk loves scrapping if it was in the usa she would have lived.I remember my dad going to the Falklands and doing air to air with 1435flt in 1990 1991.I think the phantom at Cyprus is on the dump but might go to display wise if the Raf get time to move her.
Anymore pics please carry on sending on this thread

Save Our Phantom’s
No problem JT.. As I said, I think she is due a revisit and the more care and attention she gets, the better chance of survival for the future!! Hopefully the treaty in which the Phantom falls foul will ease in the future and more can be saved.
Phil, whilst on the subject – any chance of getting our guys up there? It would be quite a publicity coup.
So if anyone else is listening and wants to help save our Phantoms, sometimes getting a small group of people together and offer free help to gate guards on MOD stations, it is possible (sadly not in Pagen’s case)
Below is a small list of what I class as the most vulnerable Phantom’s currently in the UK needing YOUR help
XT597 Boscombe Down, Wiltshire (Museum – Currently Closed?)
XT852 West Freugh Dump, Dumfries and Galloway
XT905 North Luffenham, Rutland
XT907 EOD Chattenden, Kent
XT914 Preserved Brampton
XV401 Boscombe Down, Wiltshire (Museum – Currently Closed?)
XV499 Leeming, North Yorkshire (Possibly to Elvington?)
ZE360 Manston Fire School (One of only 2 complete F4J(UK)’s left)
Regards,
Phil.

Be ngreat to see the Harrier over Falklands shots Jim, maybe start a new thread on them?
By: Lincoln 7 - 9th February 2011 at 18:39
I have some photo of Harriers actualy flying low, and over Port Stanley and other shots.Taken during the Falklands conflict.
Just don’t ask me where I got them from 😉 I am aware this is for Phantoms, but thought it may be of interest to anyone perhaps writing a book on Harriers.

Well said Phil, you’ve hit the nail firmly on the head there, shame you didn’t get to Saints in early 07.
I offered up a small team and help (inc relocation plan from W to E Camp) to the station to look after ‘500, but got a polite ….off!

XV415
I agree with Pagen!
I know that XV500 was scrapped due to a survey which was carried out on her, stating she was no longer structually sound and therefore unsafe.
This also happened to XV415 at RAF Boulmer and what do you know, the same ‘no longer structually sound’ statement again. With the scrapping of 415 in sight a few people headed by myself travelled to Boulmer to carry out our own survey. To cut a long story short and having opened up many panels on 415. She was fine, in fact she was gleaming internally with only slight corrosion on some panels. Shortly later and after the base commander being happy with our findings, let us ‘cosmetically’ restore 415 with specialist outdoor paint kindly donated by Jotuns.
Must have pulled it off as she is still there today although I think a visit is due this year to make sure all is well and rectify anything that is not.
Just to think, Boulmer were quoted more than £20k to restore her when a decent ‘band of brothers’ did it for free!

Phhwooaarr!! RUNNING! what a thought, and a total 70’s QRA with crew in full flight gear! What a sight!
Would be nice to see more of this at Brunty, with people wandering around in period flight gear?
By: pagen01 - 9th February 2011 at 12:47
Usual excuse about the US post cold-war treaty etc, that’s why it had to be scrapped – even on an MoD site!
Personaly I think someone wanted to wash their hands of caring for it and H&S implications.
By: Phantom Phil - 9th February 2011 at 12:42
Power up the god damn Speys Son…
Aye…….. RUNNING!!!
By: FLYING SAUCER - 9th February 2011 at 12:37
Scrapped! Shame, be nice to have that at Brunty!
By: pagen01 - 9th February 2011 at 09:52
Not sure this fits your remit, but this is Phantom XV500 (marked as XV498) which was St Athan’s gateguard until scrapped in July 2007.
