Came across this photo of a Piper cub in WW2 RAF colours on airliners.net
Does anyone know if Piper Cubs were used by the RAF in WW2? Never heard of one being used by the RAF before, and as Austers were perfectly suitable for the AOP role can’t think why Cubs would be needed

Ahemmmm. That should teach me to read the small print ๐ฎ ๐ Itยดs all there if Iยดd bothered to read the rest of the entry ๐ฎ
Of course you are right LN-ATC! FR886-889 were indeed reserialled HK936-HK939. And then VM286. It makes a total of 5 not 9.

The RAF had a total of nine L4B Cubs. RAF Serials FR886-FR889, total four. Then HK93-HK939, total four. Then there was the odd one out, VM286. A total of nine.

According to a couple of sites I found just now (1 and 2) FR886 was later re-serialed HK936, FR887 -> HK937, etc. I guess the correct number will be 5 then, including VM286.

Next closest you’ll get is the Flitfire.
A Taylor BC12 is far nicer to fly than a J3 ๐

Weren’t a few dozen Cubs dressed up in mock RAF markings (without camouflage) for fund raising in the USA during WW2?

The RAF used a handful of L-4Bs for testing and evaluation only. FR886 was one of them, G-BDMS is however not the original FR886.
