RAF Raeburnfoot

An airfield, according to the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust, and used by 15 EFTS – http://www.abct.org.uk/airfields/raeburnfoot

But absolutely no other information – I have tried everywhere, and come up with absolutely zero, which is very unusual for an active RAF field.

I am interested because I used to live near there for a few years as a lad, and I had had no idea that I was next door to an airfield.

Does anyone have any references to this place?

RAF Burnfoot

Burnfoot was a satellite of 15 EFTS Kingstown Carlisle a Grading School for aircrew after ITW. I was posted there from St. Andrews on New Year’s Eve Dec. 1943 moving to Burnfoot Jan.4th.. Tiger Moths grounded by weather most of January but managed to solo after 10 hrs. Feb. 28th. then off on 21 days leave Mar. 1st.

There was a wartime training base called Burnfoot some miles N. of Carlisle, near the border with Scotland (but still in Cumberland). Is this where the confusion lies ? The location of the airfield tagged on the linked map would appear – to my eyes anyway – to be uncomfortably close to the hills and mountains of the Lake District.

edit: I believe Burnfoot is better known as Longtown, the nearest village.

Strange that they give the location as Dumfries and Galloway but the map peg shows it in the Lake District?!
