Raf Service Numbers

I’m just putting together a booklet concerning a lancaster crew and came across a list showing that service numbers relate to when and where the service personnel signed up. This seems to work for most of the crew except Sgt C. N. Caldicot service number 570285 on checking the listing it indicates that he joined up in ‘Jan 1926 Aircraft Apprentices’ this doesn’t make sense as the plane crashed September 25th 1942 he aged 22 years. Any Gurus out there

The year is the year in whcih those service numbers were allocated to the reception centre. The 1926 allocation is 20,000 numbers, it would have taken quite a while to get that many apprentices through the system. It is worth noting that the next aircraft apprentice allocation was in 1944.
