RAF St Mawgan

Just come off Newquay Airport not an hour ago.

It looks like the WWII control tower may not be demolished after all and may even be utilised as ‘offices’ in a future development.

Martin……I was waving like mad…………you didn’t see me??
You can see the the tree felling just to the right of the approach, around my bungalow.

Was on my way to Perranporth and took a number of photos, but that was the closest we got as traffic was departing to the South and so we had to remain clear.

Perhaps another time? 🙂

Nice shot, I remember doing a touch and go in a Nimrod there many a year ago – seem to remember there was a silver Anson parked outside at the time

Glad to hear that the tower might survive. Heaven knows they’ve done enough to try and destroy as much of the airfield as possible already!

Ahh those happy days twenty-odd years ago when I used to pitch-up for the air show arrivals day and a couple of kindly fellas used to invite me over the hedge for a drive round in their BCU Land Rover… wonder whatever happened to them?!;)

Just thinking about this today,good news it’s being saved, looked at the tower today from “our side” of the fence when driving past what used to be ASMT :(, planned to report that it was still standing:D

I guess it will be too much to ask for the ghastly light alloy cladding to be removed?!

That cladding is what has saved this building from destruction for the last 20 years.

I was with a guy that does ‘development’ and he said there are no plans to knock it down, just remove the metal porta cabins off the met office.

If anyone is wondering what we are talking about, St Mawgan has one of only two Very Heavy Transport towers ever built, and they were the largest Air Min design built during WWII.
The other example was at Heathrow, that became dissused in the mid ’50s and believe demolished in the 1970s some time.
