RAF Tangmere planned for demolition

Hello All I’ve just received this e-mail :

Hello,

I was wondering if it may be of interest to you that Tangmere is being planned for demolision subject to permission,
I know its not in your area but its a vital historic station?
I am trying to get people to write in and voice their objections
to save it?
it is still partially surviving and as you may know it was home to Douglas Bader and several other distinct individuals including Australian Air ace Tony Gaze, new zealand ace James Norby King (known as the green kiwi) & Sir Neville Duke who broke the Air speed record at tangmere in the Hawker Hunter. there is more info on this at http://www.spitfireboy.com
I feel this to be of great disrespect to those who lost their lives serving our country.
we need to preserve such a important piece of history for the youth of today to remember our debt of gratitude we owe.
enclosed are some images of proposed demolision.
Thank you for your time, I hope you will voice your opinion to the relevant councils.
Sincerely, James Peter Liskutin (grandson of Squadron Leader M.A.’Tony’ Liskutin AFC DFC RAF 312

NB: TANGMERE MUSEUM COULD BE GREATLY IMPROVED BY THE RELEASE OF THESE BUILDINGS
TO TANGMERE MUSEUM IN THE NAME OF EDUCATION AND HERITAGE PRESERVATION.
THIS COULD BE A VALUBLE AND YET FRAGILE MOMENT FOR TANGMERE TO SHOW IT’S VALUE IN BRITAIN’S HISTORY. (webmaster)

This is an aerial pic I took back in May:

http://www.shockcone.co.uk/forums/tangmere1.jpg

I assume the apron area including the hangars and tower are under threat and that their removal would then allow two JCBs to build a housing estate on the rest of the land that isnt already covered in glasshouses?

http://www.shockcone.co.uk/forums/tangmere2.jpg

Most of the perimeter track survives apart from the south/south west edge which has either been removed or absorbed into public highway. The majority of the main runway was broken up and removed for hardcore for the A27 extensions in the early 90s I believe and only the north half of the subsidiary runway and the east end of the main runway survive in amongst the glasshouses.

Last time I flew over, there wasn’t much left of Tangmere anyway…Unlike West Raynham, which really should be saved

Thanks for that Black-Panther.

I didn’t know this was the plan. 🙁

Another one of our Historic airfields to add to the list that survived the Luftwaffe but not ideas of the planners. 😡

With the proposed housing development on Dunsfold, it makes you wonder if we’ll have any of the important wartime airfields left.

Cheers

Paul
