RAF Tornado Flies in ‘Desert Pink’ to Mark 25 Years on Operations

Twenty-five years since the Royal Air Force helped liberate Kuwait from Saddam Hussein’s forces, an RAF Tornado GR4 has been painted in the iconic Gulf War ‘desert pink’ paint scheme to honour the aircraft type’s almost continuous operational service since then. On 28 February – the 25th anniversary of Saddam’s forces’ withdrawal from Kuwait – the aircraft is planned to stage a flypast at the National Arboretum at an event honouring the British forces involved in the Gulf War.

Hi All,
Just love that scheme. :love-struck: Anyway here some footage with a rather dodgy soundtrack on the 1st video that says it all I suppose of the time.

Geoff.

Did this airframe get any actual trigger-time in the first Gulf War?

This airframe was delivered to the RAF 31st July 1991 so missed the Ops by a few months..

I thought you might like this, a shot I took last week of the a pink Jaguar at the Pima museum. You get an idea of the paint’s effectiveness against the sand.
The mueum has probably close to 20 UK aircraft on display.

There will be two FJ types (F35 & Typhoon) and I’d suggest 23 DFCs in a decade for the Chinook fleet tells you that the “front line” is not where it once was. Lovely paint job on the Fin; several mates flew them on Granby & I have nothing but the highest respect for the sorties they flew – especially in the early days before they went to ML.

Great to see one in this scheme again 🙂

Really going to be the end of an era when the Tonka is retired. Just think of all the frontline types that the RAF had when it entered service, there will only be one active frontline type with the RAF when it is retired. 🙁
