RAF Typhoon cannon saga continued

Piecing together two articles from this months AFM, the one about the Tornado F3 and the other from the Eurofighter Typhoon supplement it would appear that the Bk27 ‘will’ be fitted to ‘all’ Eurofighter Typhoons, including the RAF versions. Moreover current ‘airspace policing’ policies (this is the bit from the Tornado article) identifies not only a desire for a cannon armed fighter but also a requirement.

Part of the procedure for intercepting possible threat aircraft is ‘firing across the bows’ of the offending aircraft if it ignores all other warnings. The order to use AAMs to destroy or disable an offending aircraft can only be taken at executive (Prime Ministerial) level. Just for the record I don’t think you can get away with merely disabling an aircraft with a modern AAM.

Therefore, if the current policing procedure is maintained the RAF Typhoons will not only have to be fitted with a cannon, they will also have to be armed and fully operational.

What do you think?:)
