I’ve seen a few examples of RAF vehicles and bomb trolleys etc being used by US bomber crews on British airfields, was this standard practice or a case of making use of ‘leftovers’ after the former had vacated the airfields?

Yes they were – they had beams with holes in them and you could move the chocks to accommodate different size bombs. RAF aircraft dropped ‘US’ bombs and vice versa. It got to the point mid-war when bomb casings for common types were made with two ‘hoops’ on one side to accept US bomb shackles and one ‘hook’ on the other to accept the British single point shackle. The fins were really the only difference -the US being pressed box type (actually pretty simple and easier to produce) and the RAF being cone and circular fins. We have an extensive bomb collection in the Sywell Aviation Museum with examples of most major types (and a C type trolley) ATB TT

Thanks for the replies, and for the link Duggy. I wonder if bomb trollies were made with changeable platforms for the different size bombs used by different airforces, or if they were field converted. Probably wouldn’t take much effort to do!?

The Americans did bring over masses of their own stuff, but initially they relied on British material. The percentage gradually declined.

Standard practice, a form of reverse lend-lease. Why waste space on transatlantic convoys bringing over non-combatant vehicles when they can be supplied locally. Fordson WOT1 fire tenders and Austin K2 ambulances were often seen on 8AF airfields. Apparently K2 ambulances were used by the USAAF for some time before they were used by the RAF contrary to what Airfix would have you believe
