RAF Warwick

Does anyone have a quick run-down on what this airfield was used for, its history and perhaps an aerial overlay? We live next door to the site and it would be enlightening to learn some of its history.

(Googling does not do much…)

IIRC a blister hangar was removed to Felthorpe?

RAF Warwick opened in December 1941 as a Relief Landing Ground in 23 Group. Church Lawford used it with Oxfords and Tutors for flying instructor training. On Oct 01 1942 18(P)AFU came into being at Church Lawford and the airfield was mainly used by Oxfords and some Ansons. At the end of May 1945 the airfield was placed on Care and Maintenance.
This website is very useful for that area http://www.aviationarchaeology.org.uk/marg/index.htm

This was the surviving blister hangar at Warwick in the late 1970s.

Thanks chaps. I have the book by Graham Smith. I think what has worked here is that I though the ground was more northerly on Gog Brook Farm. You can definitely see the old hangar on Google Earth up until a few years ago.

Two books you need BR.

“Aviation in Warwickshire Between The Wars” by Alf Jenks (self-published 2006) and “Warwickshire Airfields in the Second World War” by Graham Smith (Countryside Books 2004)

Both have a brief section on Warwick.

I remember seeing the remains of some brick buildings at the south end (Longbridge) only about five years ago.

Roger Smith.

Google Earth has coverage of Warwick post-war if you roll back the clock to 1945.

You can make out the landing area plus a few blister hangers and buildings to the south.

I believe the Hilton car park is on the site where the airfield huts once stood. I stayed at the hotel recently and tried to compare the area with what was left in the 1970s but nothing is obvious. Oxfords were the main type flown from here.
