I am researching a little known RAF ‘square bashing’ base from the 1950’s based at West Kirby on the Wirral.
I’ve retrieved a lot of info off the internet but has anyone got any other info – for example: service history (apparently it was bombed in WW2), plans etc
Possibly for an article
Thanks
Rob

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-02-02 AT 09:29 AM (GMT)]Hi guys there is also a book that you can get probably better look for it in the library as this series is well sought after.
the Series is called Action Stations and then a number ie 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 etc
My Local book is Action Stations no 7 Scotland, North East England and Nothern Ireland.
If you post here with the county that West Kirby is in ie Yorkshire etc then I will tell you the number of the book to look for.
Also if you want additional info on the airfield then Im afraid it a trip to the PRO in London at Kew.
They have mostly all the Station ORBs and the Wing ORBs and individual squadron ORBs but it would have to be a well planned visit.
search for the PRO on the internet and browse their PROCRAT catalogue for the station you want it is in the AIR series of the Catalogue but I dont know the individual number.

RE: RAF WEST KIRBY
Rob – I had a wander round last weekend and found it very sad when I compared my childhood memories to what is left now. I photographed the remains of one building foundation but that was about it.
Please keep me in touch with how you get on – she really does
need something written about her before she disappears below a bland
housing estate.

RE: RAF WEST KIRBY
Hi guys if you want to get a site plan of the place then youll want to contact the RAF museum at Hendon. They have a information services department. Ask fo the plan by name and they will tell you if they have it and from what dates they have ie:- 1917-1919 or 1933 or 1939-1945 etc etc.
From there you will need to send an email (or letter) saying Please accept this as my order (with the name or reference of the plan) and they will send it out.
I have ordered all the local plans of my area and luckily they had all the plans except 1 which I got from a local history group so also try these type of groups.
The plan from the RAF museum will cost £1 £2 £3 depending on the size ie A4 A3 A2.
happy hunting. you will get the contact details if you search for RAF HENDON.

Yes – I seem to remember that they cleared most of it about 1984/5 I think – a lot of people learned to drive there on the old roads after the RAF had departed and indeed much of the sandtone kerb blocks ended up in people’s rockeries. I think I will take a sort ‘pilgrimage’ this weekend as I am up in Merseyside.

RE: RAF WEST KIRBY
Thank god for that!!! _ I spent many a happy hour during my childhood
wandering around the remains of the buildings – foundations by then
with only the range building still fairly intact. I would be interested in anything you find out about it – they had a Spitfire gate guardian there in the 1950’s( Spitfire V AR614) which is now airworthy in the U.S.
