A couple of years ago i posted the following link on this site regarding finds from a crashed Hurricane.

New pieces are always coming to the surface every year after the farmer has cultivated. A few weeks ago i was walking through the field and something silver caught my eye and i found this laying on the surface about 100yds from the crash site.
I was wondering if this would be part of the pilots uniform or if it is just a coincidence that it was found in the field. It measures just under 5cms across.

I like Andy’s theory of a possible attachment to a small personal memorial planted close by the crash site by a loved one….
By its size, together with the longevity of time, it became covered over , or even buried, waiting to be found, thus restarting the quest of knowlege and remembrance.
There has to be a touching story here somewhere………………

I would go with Andy’s theory, I thought the same. They are sweetheart wings , but of a slightly later period. The set here are from the late 1930’s.
Still Kings Crown though.

A thought, there is no reason that this object was in the aircraft there is no evidence tying it to the aircraft. It could have been dropped by anyone considering if the site was cleared/inspected by RAF personnel.

Possibly. It was not always unusual for pilots to fly with hats or caps stowed in the aircraft. However, I am not convinced it is a piece of official kit.
Presumably this pilot was killed?
If so, it is not beyond the bounds of reason that this was attached to some impromptu cross or memorial put at the crash site by a relative or some-such person and this is what you have found. Just a theory….

Just out of interest, even if it was a side cap badge would there be a reason for it to be in the aircraft in the first place?

Not in silver or silver coloured, though?
Not only that, but the crown and albatross are seperated by about a centimetre physical space on the officer’s side hat badge. This one isnt. Also, 5cm is too small for an officers side hat badge.

Looks like the badge from an RAF Officer’s side hat (forage cap).

Andy.
The fixings on the back are missing but it appears that there were two fixing points that were soldered on. I do not believe it is actually silver, there are no hall marks.

Not sure if this is a poignant find, or an unrelated but interesting find. It doesn not look to be an official uniform
or badge item, though.
What is the fixing on the reverse? Can you post a photo?
Is it actually silver?
I am inclined to think its an RAF Sweethearts brooch, but not seen one quite like it before.
Fascinating.
