RAF Winthorpe Research Assistance (2013)

A fresh appeal has been posted on the NAM Website seeking information about RAF Winthorpe.

In particular this relates to a few gaps in the airfields story from the post war years – circa 1946 through to 1959.

Units of particular interest are:
54 MU
61 MU
CSDE (Central Servicing Development Establishment)

Contact methods are outlined in the above weblink and I will also pass on any relevant information.

Since the RAF Winthorpe book was published the museum has dealt with several trade orders for the book directly. Earlier today confirmation came through advising that the museum’s account on the Nielsen book ordering system has been activated and copies can now be ordered via this international system.

It’s also good to be able to report that several libraries in the East Midlands have also ordered copies.

If you want to make contact with Colin to help with your crew research please let me know and I’ll send you his email address; although you may have it from Cockpit-Fest space booking. Alternatively if you were around for the book signing on the15th I’m sure that he’d offer advice then – I’d stand you a coffee as well! 🙂

The NAM website isn’t set up for online purchases, but telephone orders / with credit cards etc. can be arranged (Tel: 01636 707170) the post & packing rates have been added in here!

Sorry I missed you too, would have loved a catch up, I’m already a quarter of the way through, found a mention of two of my crew flying with other crews in early 1943 so of course having to follow that up now, but what I’ve read is excellent!!!! Just out of interest as people are asking me, can you purchase them online from the shop?

I’m sorry that I missed you jr, I was at the museum until about 1.00pm today. I met up with a Belgian researcher to pass over some Lancaster Ale – he completed the first export sale for the book, which will be heading back to Belgium after a short stopover at EK for the taxi-run / fireworks.

I hope that you enjoy the book, during a well-earned rest day! 🙂

A bit of anecdotal feedback following a visit to NAM this morning – thanks to any forumites that have visited the museum to purchase copies of the new book; I’m advised there has been a steady influx of such visitors during the last 48 hours!

It’s great to see such support! :applause:

It’ll arrive too late ‘to be in the book’! 😀

Only joking, NAM is always keen to add new material re RAF Winthorpe to the archive as it provides a useful cross-referencing source.

The new book has a good set of appendices and bibliography, which detail all of the author’s sources – a comprehensive set of research tools in their own right!

I’ve just taken delivery of the final printer’s proof / mock-up of this book, which looks brilliant.

My main involvement has been on the production side of the project, but having now had a quick glance through I feel that the author has produced a great book that will be viewed as a fitting tribute to the airfield, its personnel and the local inhabitants of the Newark area. 🙂

The high resolution PDF file of the RAF Winthorpe book has now been delivered to the printers and the museum is awaiting confirmation of its publication date.

At just over 200 pages it is anticipated that this interesting new title will be in the NAM Shop well before the Christmas rush – details of a special launch event and book signing session will be announced shortly.

Following on from the research appeals last year it is good to be able to report that a lot of the material found is being included in a new book that is already at the ‘typesetting stage’.

About half an hour ago the first twelve chapters arrived from the designer for proof reading.

Details of the final publication date still have to be agreed, but it looks set for some time in the autumn, its contents are described by the author as:

“The story of a wartime airfield from 1939 to its final closure in 1959, the units, personnel and aircraft that served and had links there. It details its place in the history of the RAF and the people that were connected to it.”

A further information request has been added to the NAM website seeking information about the 5 Group Aircrew Commando School being based on the airfield before moving to RAF Barkston Heath.

Does anyone have any information that might help validate or disprove that suggestion?
