RAFM Hendon – 06Nov12

Was going to go to Duxford today but there were cancellations and delays on the Cambridge/London train line, overhead cables apparently, so I went Huntingdon/London and a trip to Hendon. I was going to go last week but being half term I thought against it. Apart from a couple of school parties, the museum was virtually deserted today. I was using my Sony NEX-5N CCS with manual settings, on a monopod and with the camera strap around my neck and tensioned produces a pretty stable shooting platform and I was getting some very low exposure times. Photos in the order they were taken.

IWM already has an RE8 – unique in fact as it’s the only one left with the RAF engine (the Belgian one has a Hispano Suiza engine and looks more like a Bristol Fighter at the front) – it’s just extremely poorly displayed!

I don’t think the purists want gaps -I think they scratch their heads when the see the likes of the very original Farman leave the country -an aircraft that has a flying history in this country from the very early years of aviation.
Couple that with the strange relationships that the national museums seem to have and you have to wonder why the likes of the RE8 couldn’t have moved from Duxford to Hendon on loan in return for something from the RAFM collection.

I can see what you mean, i think there should be more rotation between collections, be good to see for example to see a Defiant or Battle at Duxford for 6 months?

I wonder what gems will emerge next? Some of the bigger types? An O/400 would be nice!

It’ll be worth the wait.

David

I remarked on the Duxford thread why some sort of deal between the IWM and the RAFM couldn’t have been made. As it is the IWM already has the BE2 as representative of WW1 RFC Observation aircraft, would they really miss the RE8 that much if the FW190 loan from the RAFM was made permanent or something similar.

As it is I think the Farman is a great loss as to my mind it was representative of all those Farman trainers that served in WW1 with the RFC.

I also wonder why can’t the B17 be painted up and modded in 100 group colours and the Mitchell as a 2TAF aircraft, and leave it to Duxford to showing the American effort in WW2.

Its beyond some belief that some purists would rather have gaps in the collection than these high quality reproductions. They look stunning. Just a shame they couldnt be rolled out once in a while.

The Hanriot and the Farman are going to New Zealand I guess as payment for the Albatros, RE8 and Snipe.

No HDR. I have the histogram on the LCD screen and try and adjust the settings to get the correct exposure, flat at each end and peak in the middle, but I do have the ‘Dynamic Range Optimiser’ set on Auto.

Thanks Rob, I didn’t realise Brisfit was a later term. With the regard to the RR Falcon, was it a case that early ones were left handed and later ones right, or is it not as simple as that? I also can’t help wondering why the direction was changed at all. Any ideas?

I don’t know why they produced them in both handed versions to be honest, Wikipedia says that the Falcon I was produced in left and right handed versions, and so was the larger RR Eagle I which the Falcon was derived from – possibly something to do with engine wear on the Falcon, I think the Eagle’s handed-ness comes from the Handley Page twin engine O/100 and O/400 bombers

Great shots Brian, my last efforts at Hendon came out rather differently! 😀 Great shots of the Lightning and the cutaway Brisfit, which appears to have a left-handed prop? Were there right handed and left handed RR Falcons?

Yes, left hand is correct – there’s even painted arrows on the blue band on each side of the blade to remind ground crew which way to start it. Regarding the term ‘Brisfit’, this is believed to be a post-WW1 term and I certainly haven’t seen it in any WW1 literature, whereas the crews commonly called them ‘Biff’s

The other David.

The Hanriot is a bit hidden away :diablo: and the overhead shot of the Snipe I mentioned.

Brian,
A special request for a pic of the Hanriot. It could be the last chance to see it before departure.

– for the Lightning shot did you use a monopod to get the height ?

Err, no. I was standing on the steps that give children access to the Jet Provost cockpit they can sit in.

Lovely light

Brian – always love the quality of your work – for the Lightning shot did you use a monopod to get the height ?
Good to see one aircraft in the museum I’ve actually flown! – in fact sadly I’ve actually flown in 5 of the actual aircraft is that a record?
