RAFM Wellington

Just been reading Ken Ellis’ new W&R spin-off volume on British Aviation Collections – a cracking read by the way – but I note that he says that the RAFM Wellington is being restored in it’s post-war navigation T.X trainer guise, rather than as an operational B.X bomber.

Is this the case – surely they have the Tempest TT5 to represent the secondary, subsidiary, role of former combat types.

Given the importance of the Wellington in Bomber (and Coastal ) Commands – particularly in the earlier part of WWII, surely to present it as a factory fresh, turrreted, bomber configured Wellington would be more appropriate than as a silver-doped, yellow T-banded flying classroom.

Certainly not Trumpeter but more like Matchbox.

No, they (and MPM/SH) did a waffle pattern! Thanks RJH!

Lovely picture that shows how a fabric covered geodetic wing looks – would you mind if I shared the link to a modelling page?

I don’t mind at all !

Wing looked like this during this years open days, hope the Cosford camouflage guru doesn’t mind being appearing in a picture on this thread ! A very helpful guy and a mine of information.

A view of the left side of the fuselage looking forward from the tail.

What was the purpose of that round hole just in front of the last frame? I know its not the elevator hinge as its aft of the elevator trailing edge and I’ve also seen it on the piece of Warwick rear fuselage at Duxford so its not unique to this Wellington.
I have a theory but I’d like the opinion of the Forum’s hive mind before revealing it.

I like the look of the wing when it had no covering at all, this is from one of the open days 2014. But I suppose if one day it will be part of a complete aeroplane, then it has to be covered, and yes – with the bomber scheme !

I annoyed a number of spotters at an airshow once when with the help of a few strips of black bodge tape I turned a 1 into a 4 in the serial number, but only on one side of the fuselage.

Rat Acc, I like the way you think. The half and half would be especially fascinating, and it would spark some interesting discussions and lead to a few unusual bits of history being learned. The paint scheme won’t ever happen except in the world of models, but it’s a fun plan of action.

The Spanish Air Force Museum near Madrid has a number of aircraft painted half and half to show that the types served on both sides in the civil war. It’s confusing to put it mildly until you realise what’s been done.

When’s it estimated to be complete?

They’ve been working on it for 4 years and all they have finished is the starboard outer mainplane, so still some time to go. (No I didn’t ask)

From the finish on the recovered starboard wing seen today at the conservation centre open day/week, they’re staying with a bomber scheme.
